Bucknell University chooses TDI to produce aerial video for virtual tour
Bucknell University is one of the top liberal arts colleges in the nation as well as a leader in the fields of engineering, business, education, and music. Located in Lewisburg, PA, the University's 3,350 undergraduates and 150 graduate students enjoy one of the most beautiful campuses in Pennsylvania.
The Bucknell Admissions Department contracted TDI Productions to produce aerial video segments for the department's new on-line virtual tour. In addition TDI was to produce over one hundred still images which will be used for purposes as varied as marketing, fundraising and building development studies for future additions to the campus. The challenge: all of the filming had to be completed within a week and a half of the project's approval, before the university set up large tents in preparation for the Spring graduation ceremony.

Director Christopher Smith visited the campus before the shoot and used GPS data, satellite imagery and Bucknell's own campus maps to produce a detailed list of helicopter movements and camera angles. Admissions Director Jim Shaynak accompanied Chris on a tour of the campus during which all of the possibilities were discussed and the final shot list was approved. After this, TDI Productions produced four matching binders each with maps of the areas to filmed, the movements of the helicopters, the camera angles and points of focus as well as any safety concerns such as towers and antennae. On the day of the shoot the pilot, director, camera operator and the Admissions Department were all given one of these binders to ensure that all were playing from the same sheet of music. Admission's Director Shaynak was also given an ground-to-air radio so that he could communicate with Chris and the pilots.

TDI used two helicopters to capture the images. The first, a Bell Jet Ranger III, was equipped with a FLIR Systems gyro-stabilized camera and a Betacam deck. This helicopter was used to capture the sweeping fly-overs of the campus as well as close-ups of important features. The second helicopter, a Hughes C300 carried the Director and the gyro-stabilized digital still camera.
The video and still images were delivered in under three weeks from the time Bucknell paid their initial deposit. Some of the images can be viewed by clicking the triangle button on the media player in the upper left of this page.
