To achieve the unique level of quality Mondo flooring offers, special steps must be taken at every level of installation. The new video training materials detail the entire process from removal of existing installations, preparations of surfaces, protection of the surrounding environment and the entire installation process. The final materials are available in both Webcast and DVD formats and will be used to instruct certified installers, subcontractors and other interested parties in the proper methods and precautions for installation of Mondo products nationwide.
This project was directed by Christopher Smith and John Schultz in coordination with Mondo USA's Northeast Sales Manager Glenn Hoy and National Dealer Support Manager Latasha Pittman. As video was obtained at work sites, it was encoded and streamed on a private webpage on the TDIProductions.com website. This allowed interested parties from Mondo's various regional offices to view footage within 24-48 hours and provide feedback to the directors. This not only condensed the time needed to select clips from the hours of footage shot on-site, but also ensured that the content was correct and that nothing needed to be re-shot. The entire sport flooring production is broken into six modules with a total length of 30 minutes.

Video for the trade show environment (Click here for the full article with photos and video)
1. Why bother? 2. Effectiveness 3. Cost
Why bother?
The convention and trade show environment is one of the few places businesses square off in a direct competition for the attention of potential clients. Millions are invested annually in the development of booths and kiosks designed to attract buyers and retain their attention. This can lead to an overwhelming experience for the potential client who is often overloaded with choices and eventually visits booths based on whether or not they appear to be worth visiting. Video and multimedia content has now become one of the benchmarks in trade show booth design and is one of the key ways buyers decide which exhibitors are worthy of their time.
Effectiveness
At TDI effective trade show video begins with an accurate understanding of what motivates the people you want to invest time and energy talking to. TDI director Christopher Smith:
"Having appealing content which only interests potential buyers in the key to effectiveness in this competitive arena. Remember, having a crowd of people standing in front of your booth who never intend to buy actually wastes your time and hurts your booth's effectiveness. As Director, I often advocate that clients begin with a sharp, full motion 3D animation which specifically identifies the product or service from 30 to 100 feet away. If the product is a helicopter blade, show exactly that, no background, no distractions just the product. If you build that, they will come. Once visitors are at your booth we show them useful and informative content which will hook a potential buyer and give those not seeking your product or service enough information to know they should nod approvingly and move on."
"A well thought out professional trade show video says several things. The first is that your product or service is worthy of a video, that you have invested time and energy into it, and that you are proud of it."
Cost
As the costs of trade show participation, booth design and fabrication increase, video is sometimes left as a back-burner item. This is unfortunate because those businesses that do invest in a quality multimedia presentation have an immediate advantage, especially as the size of the trade show increases. If patrons can't visit every exhibitor they will limit their visits to the best looking booths.
Video is often the least expensive part of booth design. TDI produces effective (often award winning) trade show video presentations in the $2,500 to $15,000 range with travel, length and complexity forming the bulk of the difference. The productions often incorporate not only custom 3D animations and graphics but video shot on location and photographs supplied by the client. Bucknell University chooses TDI to produce aerial video for virtual tour (Click here for full article with photos and video)
Bucknell University is one of the top liberal arts colleges in the nation as well as a leader in the fields of engineering, business, education, and music. Located in Lewisburg, PA, the University's 3,350 undergraduates and 150 graduate students enjoy one of the most beautiful campuses in Pennsylvania.
In May of 2005 the Bucknell Admissions Department contracted TDI Productions to produce aerial video segments for the department's new on-line virtual tour. In addition TDI was to produce over one hundred still images which will be used for purposes as varied as marketing, fundraising and building development studies for future additions to the campus. The challenge: all of the filming had to be completed within a week and a half of the project's approval, before the university set up large tents in preparation for the 2005 graduation ceremony.
Director Christopher Smith visited the campus before the shoot and used GPS data, satellite imagery and Bucknell's own campus maps to produce a detailed list of helicopter movements and camera angles. Admissions Director Jim Shaynak accompanied Chris on a tour of the campus during which all of the possibilities were discussed and the final shot list was approved. After this, TDI Productions produced four matching binders each with maps of the areas to filmed, the movements of the helicopters, the camera angles and points of focus as well as any safety concerns such as towers and antennae. On the day of the shoot the pilot, director, camera operator and the Admissions Department were all given one of these binders to ensure that all were playing from the same sheet of music. Admission's Director Shaynak was also given an ground-to-air radio so that he could communicate with Chris and the pilots.

|
TDI used two helicopters to capture the images. The first, a Bell Jet Ranger III, was equipped with a FLIR Systems gyro-stabilized camera and a Betacam deck. This helicopter was used to capture the sweeping fly-overs of the campus as well as close-ups of important features. The second helicopter, a Hughes C300 carried the Director and the gyro-stabilized digital still camera.
The video and still images were delivered in under three weeks from the time Bucknell paid their initial deposit. Some of the images can be viewed by clicking the triangle button on the media player in the upper left of this page.

Expert from Johns Hopkins hosts educational webcasts (Click here for full article with photos)
The June 18th 2005 issue of U.S. News and World Report rated Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland the number one hospital in the country for treatment of Kidney Disease. Barbara Fivush M.D. is the Director of Pediatric Nephrology at the Johns Hopkins Childen's Center. TDI Productions recently visited the Children's Center to film two educational video productions which will stream on the Kidney and Urology Foundation of America, Inc. website and may be distributed via DVD and VHS cassette.
The webcasts, which have been funded through an unrestricted educational grant from Genentech, Inc. aim to educate viewers about the serious but treatable effects of growth failure in children suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). The first piece is geared to a professional audience of health care providers and contains detailed information on recognition and diagnosis of CKD related growth failure as well as information on tests, precautions and available treatment options. The second segment, which will stream from a different page on the KUFA web site, targets patients and concerned family members who may or may not be aware of CKD related growth failure and its treatments.
TDI filmed the entirety of the production on-site without disrupting the workings of the Children's Center. Because of Dr. Fivush's understandably busy schedule, it was decided that the piece should be filmed against a green screen onto which a background would be superimposed in post-production. This allowed Director Christopher Smith to film the entire piece with a single lighting scheme and avoided the inevitable breaks and readjustments required when shooting a subject against an actual background. Once Dr. Fivush had completed her segments the crew (which numbered only 4) obtained background images from the room of the Johns Hopkins building.
The production was shot using a Sony DSR-570 DVCAM camera equipped with a telepromter. The footage will stream in both Quicktime and Windows Media formats and will have high and low bandwidth options to meet the data rate requirements of various ISPs.
Award-Winning Medical Education Video Reaches Over 5000 Clinics Nationwide (Click here for full article with photos and video)
TDI was informed in late 2004 that "Growing up with Kidney Disease" received an Aegis Award for 2004 bringing the 2003-04 number of awards to eleven. This production began in January of 2004 when the Kidney and Urology Foundation of America Inc. chose TDI to produce a 12 minute patient education video detailing the serious risk of growth failure in young patients suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). The project was funded through an unrestricted educational grant from Genentech Inc.
Director Christopher Smith used a combination of on-screen child testimonials, expert clinical analysis and custom 3D animations to drive home the importance of consistent, proper measurement in children suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). The majority of the production was filmed at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore in New York City. TDI accomplished all of the post-production in-house and posted daily edits on a private web page so script-writers, producers and consultants could review the content. Kidney and Urology Foundation of America Inc. Program Director Carol Brower explains:
"Our team included script-writers and consultants all across the country. Each was able to see the project come together daily through on-line previews. This allowed them to make timely suggestions and corrections. The ability to keep our key players in the loop saved us a tremendous amount of time and money. In the end we received a technically superb production which was sensitive to our important message to young patients and their families."

|
TDI Director Christopher Smith prepared for the project by learning as much as possible about Chronic Kidney Disease and its treatments. Chris met with clinicians, families and young people who have suffered the effects of growth failure. He also did an extensive amount of reading about growth failure in CKD and its primary treatment, Growth Hormone Therapy. Program Director Carol Brower feels this had a direct impact of the quality of the production.
"I had no idea that Chris as the video director would work so hard to understand the disease process and treatments we wanted to illustrate. He could see the project from many angles and interacted with the doctors, patients and families in a very informed and intelligent way. He asked questions that really got to the heart of the matter and dedicated the time and effort to communicate clearly to our audience."
Pediatric Renal Social Worker Maya Doyle of The Children's Hospital at Montefiore was part of the scriptwriting team and as the project's co-producer worked closely with TDI throughout the production.
"The TDI staff impressed us with the way they became "experts" on the topic and helped us organize a good script into a great production. We had good communication and problem-solving every step of the way. "Growing Up with Kidney Disease" is not only a great teaching tool for families, it's a moving reminder to professionals to not forget about the important issue of growth for these children and their families." |
|
In addition to producing the live video segments, TDI also produced 3D animations to enhance viewers understanding of the content. These included details of the Pituitary Gland, Brain and Skull, as well as an animation showing how Growth Hormone interacts with body tissues to facilitate growth. An on-screen animation of a Growth Chart was produced to help viewers understand how growth failure is detected.
TDI produced the voiceover and other soundtrack elements including the music which is an original piece composed and performed by Christopher Smith.
Growing up with Kidney Disease has been distributed to clinics nationwide and will be used by medical professionals to educate at-risk families. Growth failure in CKD is safely treatable through the use of Growth Hormone Therapy. Early detection and treatment is extremely important in minimizing the serious physical and emotional impact of Growth Failure. TDI was named the winner of five Aegis Awards for 2004. The Aegis Awards is a nationwide competition for excellence in film and video production. In addition to winning entries in the Historical Education and Community Education categories, this is the first TDI award for a purely commercial production. The award-winning industrial marketing DVD was Carson Helicopters 2004 Marketing Production. This DVD details the benefits of Carson's newly designed, FAA certified rotor blade for the Sikorsky S-61 (a machine familiar to all as the helicopter used to transport the President of the United States). To learn more about this production Click here.
The entries are judged exclusively by video experts and former winners. The 2004 Aegis Awards honor productions produced in 2003 and 2004 which meet a standard of excellence decided by the award's board of experts. Winners are announced quarterly. Other 2003-2004 winners included: WGBH Boston Public Television, Mississippi Public Broadcasting Corp., University of Alaska Southeast, WGVU-TV and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Television. |

TDI Productions won two Omni Intermedia Awards for 2004 in the Historical Education and Environmental Education categories. The Omni Awards were created to recognize the accomplishments of outstanding media production in a variety of fields. Entries are judged by the Omni Awards Committee, made up of experts in almost every aspect of media production. This year's committee featured members from: The Public Broadcasting Corporation, AT&T Intermedia, CNN, NBC News and various cable networks and film companies.
TDI Productions was awarded a 2004 Summit Award for Watershed Roots (see above). The Summit Awards is a truly international competition and this year the competition was judged by video experts from seven countries. Watershed Roots won the award for the much contested Education category. The Summit Awards does not break down entries by sub-categories such as "environmental education" therefore a very broad spectrum of entries compete in this category. |

Our Mission (Click here for full article with photos)
TDI Production's mission is to bring affordable excellence to the largely overlooked $2,500 to $45,000 video and digital media market. We are dedicated to producing visually stunning, engaging and effective productions for the small and medium sized organizations which are often under-served by the larger corporate media companies.
TDI Productions pledges to all clients that we will:

Devote time and energy to understanding your mission and goals before offering solutions
TDI Productions only deals with 10-15 major clients per year; this gives us the opportunity to understand each organization's existing strategies and future plans. Our approach actually saves time and money by ensuring the effectiveness and longevity of each project.
-Carol Brower, Program Director, Kidney and Urology Foundation of America Inc., 2004

Produce top-quality products without disrupting the important work your organization does
TDI Productions has the experience and dedication to design timely, cost-effective media without distracting your staff from its primary goals. Thorough pre-production meetings and surveys ensure that we obtain exactly what you need with the smallest crew possible. During production every TDI staff person works to protect and respect the facilities, equipment and environment your organization relies on.
"Our trade show video project was shot on location at our facility and at test sites around the country. In an aerospace design company such as ours operations must continue with minimal impact from video productions. Whether we were testing our new design on the tarmac or overhauling helicopters at our home base, TDI Productions obtained superior footage without disturbing our ongoing operations."
-Erik Szabo, IT Director, Carson Helicopters, 2002

Return phone calls and e-mails promptly and let you see your project develop daily with online previews
At TDI Productions you will deal with one person who has the knowledge to guide you through the process and the authority to implement your desires, the Director. You will have input at every stage of your project's development through online previews of video as it is being edited. One of the key ways TDI consistently produces projects for thousands less than the competition is by allowing timely input from the client. This minimizes wasted time and costly re-edits.
"Let me just add that I don't think I have ever worked with a company that was so easy to work with and answered phone calls and e-mails so quickly. This really helped expedite the process for us."
-Ed Gyllenhaal, Curator, Glencairn Museum, 2004

Guarantee reasonable pricing and delivery dates before filming begins
Because we are a focused, low-volume production company we pledge in writing that your project will receive top-priority service and a guaranteed price and delivery date. On average we save organizations 10%-30% on projects by understanding their target and hitting it accurately the first time.
"Working with TDI Productions was fantastic! We produced web-video, DVDs and interactive CDROMS for our annual symposium at a very reasonable price. TDI produced excellent products and were able to weave together video, still pictures, PDF documents and even links to our web site all within our budget."
-Robert Traver, Ph.D., Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Villanova University, 2003

Guarantee price protection on future project updates
As your organization grows and changes over the years, you may wish to update your project to keep the information current. When this time comes, TDI will provide the video, photography, editing and other services you need at the same hourly rate you originally paid for your project so long as the new piece retains 75% of its original content. The only exceptions to this guarantee apply to "special" segments such as aerial or underwater shots and other extraordinary items such as 3D animation; these are always billed at market rate.

Never charge fees or place restrictions on the future use of your footage
Many organizations spend thousands of dollars on video and photography only to find that they do not have unrestricted rights to the final product. At TDI Productions you have no restrictions, period. So long as the footage is not re-sold, it may be used in any of your other projects and applications regardless of whether TDI Productions is involved in those projects.

Assist you in developing and presenting effective and realistic concepts, scripts, production plans and schedules for your media project
TDI Productions will assist you in not only developing your media concept, but in packaging and presenting it to boards, donors or partner organizations. TDI is able to assist you in packaging your concept in a way which will inform decision makers and inspire them to act. Director Christopher Smith regularly makes himself available to attend public and private meetings to explain the benefits of proposed productions and the process which brings them to fruition.
Pricing (Click here for full article with photos)
Any figures listed here are intended to give a range of costs for general information and planning purposes. The prices vary over time with market conditions and factors such as distance, time-frame and other factors which influence most businesses. None of these projections constitute a quote. Quotes are available after a personal or phone consultation during which we will assess your particular needs and adjust accordingly.
TDI Productions is a lean, low-overhead company with the flexibility to produce small to medium budget projects nationwide. Our business model is founded on a manageable client base for which we can produce timely, effective and often award-winning productions. TDI typically produces projects in the $2,500 to $45,000 category with a majority of productions in the low-teens. Many services are available separately and clients often save significantly by using TDI for the higher-end services and accomplishing other parts of a project in-house. TDI's flexibility in working with partner organizations is the key to producing the affordable excellence we pride ourselves on.
Because media production is an art, it can be frustrating to appraise exactly how much a given piece is worth. First and foremost, when pricing video, photography or graphic design, you must bear in mind that you are really paying for the artistic input of the director, photographer, writer and technical personnel. Anyone with suitable funds can acquire the equipment to produce high quality images. Truly excellent projects, however, are not a function of equipment, but of the artistic vision that utilizes the equipment. High-Definition video of a poorly thought out script is a waste of money. Similarly, a brilliant script can be ruined by a director who does not have the talent to produce it appropriately.
What your organization pays for an effective project is largely a function of the items listed below. While this is not an exhaustive list, it can help in budgeting your project. TDI can give a general price range for a certain project over the phone but exact quotes come only after we have a full understanding of your project. Any prices listed below are for TDI Productions only and may change without notice to reflect market conditions. Prices change over time as technology improves and various factors like travel expenses, labor expenses and other factors change. Bear in mind that each of the services below is also available separately.
Scripting - $500 to $10,000
The Script is far and away the most important aspect of any production, even those which have no narration such as tradeshow or convention pieces. The script is the key component in the communication between the Director and the client. No amount of artistic talent or technical wizardry can make a poor script effective. TDI Productions writes original scripts or, more often, works from client outlines or partial scripts. The cost for a script reflects the time required to write it as well as other factors such as research and revisions. Typically a client can expect to pay between $50.00 and $300.00 per minute of actual time (run-time) in the finished production. Thus the scripting of a fifteen minute educational or training production usually costs in the area of $1000.00 to $4500.00. TDI Productions often refines or touches-up existing scripts or outlines provided by clients. This is a great cost-saving measure due to the fact that much of the research is completed by the client.
Production Management - $500 to $5,000
Experienced production management is absolutely essential to completing projects on time and on budget. The entire production process must be thought through from start to finish so that efforts are not duplicated or wasted. Successful directors coordinate the many elements that make up the production and plan for the astounding number of variables which professional projects entail. The management cost of a given project is directly proportional to the project's complexity. Management can comprise anywhere from 10 to 30 percent of the total budget.
Production - $1000 to $30,000
Much of a video production's expense comes in shooting the original images that will used in the final product. These costs reflect the equipment, personnel and consumable items needed. The cost is heavily effected by the format which will be used to capture the original images. TDI Productions regularly produces projects in the High Definition (HDCAM), Betacam SP, and DVCAM formats. Rates are usually based on 10 hour days but can be broken down depending on the client's needs. We operate on a minimum four hour per day schedule.
Day and hourly rates will vary due to location, shooting and lighting conditions and any camera movements which are required. Our team can accomplish an almost limitless range of camera movements including: Steadicam (body mounted), robotic crane and jib movements from 9 to 35 feet, and various vehicle and helicopter mounted movements. These creative elements can be enhanced by compositing tools which allow real and virtual backgrounds to be inserted into almost any shot. In addition, video "impossibilities" can be created by filming multiple passes of the same scene and combining elements later (This is how one actor can play two parts on screen at the same time as in Disney's remakes of The Parent Trap and The Nutty Professor).
Digital Photography $1000 to $10,000
Often used as a component of a larger media project, digital photography is available separately as well. Currently more than 150,000 TDI Productions photographs have been printed in various magazines, publications and brochures. TDI uses a variety of cameras and formats depending on the subject matter and conditions. Generally, digital photography costs between $50 and $100 per hour and usually carries a five hour minimum which includes time for touching up and formatting the finished images for the particular media in question. TDI issues licenses for most images and the client is then free to use, copy or alter the photos for their purposes so long as they do not re-sell the images (which requires a royalty arrangement).
Post-production $1000 to $25,000
The other cost and time intensive aspect of any project is post-production. This includes everything from editing and color-correction to formatting the final product for DVD, Internet or broadcast. The director is heavily involved in each phase of this process especially the editing. Clients are able to view the results daily through a private web page which displays updated copies of the work in progress. This allows for timely input from producers, scriptwriters and consultants. Suggestions can be sent straight to the Director or posted for review by the entire team.
The editing process involves far more than simply assembling the images into a pleasing presentation, music, narration, graphics and animations all play a part in the process as well. 2D and 3D graphic and animation elements can be extremely important to a production depending on the subject matter. TDI Productions can custom produce 3D animations to illustrate anything from a museum floor plan to a medical condition or treatment. Depending on the application, virtual elements can be added to live action shots to create backgrounds which are either too expensive or remote to film or are otherwise not available.
When it comes to cable or broadcast television, each broadcaster has technical standards which must be met before they will allow a particular piece to air; these must be understood and anticipated. Similarly, producing for the DVD format requires the management of file formats and compression schemes. The care a company takes in these post-production areas will directly affect the quality of the final presentation. Depending on the complexity of the project, post-production can consume 40 to sometimes 60 percent of the budget.
Distribution
A great project deserves to have excellent distribution. TDI productions often guides organizations in the duplication, packaging and distribution of their video projects. While these items are not considered part of the production budget it is important to consider them from the outset.
Ownership and Protection:
The issue of ownership is a major point of contention within the video industry. Many organizations have purchased thousands of dollars of video production services believing that they would be able to modify the project later and use footage in subsequent productions. Only later have they found that the video production company retains all rights to the original footage unless they specifically assign those rights to the client.
TDI Productions clarifies this issue simply: your organization has full use of every frame of the original video shot for your production, period. You will never have to pay additional fees or royalties to use that footage in any project your company produces in the future regardless of whether TDI produces it (though TDI Productions name must appear in the credits of such a production). The only time your organization would need approval from TDI Productions is if the footage is to be re-sold to another entity. These restrictions ensure that TDI footage is not misused and is properly credited.
Another fear which organizations have, concerns updates and changes to their productions. TDI addresses this by guaranteeing that should you desire to add to, subtract from or change content within a production you will pay the hourly rate you paid for the original production or less regardless of how many months or years have elapsed. This allows organizations such as Universities to highlight new programs or facilities, museums to add new exhibits to their video tours, corporations to update their trade show presentations or pharmaceutical companies to add information about new discoveries and treatments.
The rate guarantee applies to filming and editing and only excludes "specials" such as aerial, underwater and 3D elements which are always billed at the market rate. A given piece is considered "the same production" so long as it retains 75% of its original content.
